Description
Featured in this auction is a beautiful, miniature vintage Van Briggle Art Pottery low bowl and round flower frog. The bowl is round with a gorgeous arts-and-crafts floral motif of blossoms and leaves encircling the shoulder. The mini flower frog is also round. Both pieces appear to have had some hand-shaping done since neither the rim of the bowl nor the frog is perfectly round. These pottery pieces are in excellent condition with no chips, no cracks, light crazing and no repairs; however, the glazes are heavy and slightly obscure the decorative images on the bowl. There are light scuffs and scratches on both pieces as well as very-light mineral staining inside the bowl from gentle use, but they are both in excellent condition. The low bowl is 2" tall, almost 7" wide at the shoulder, and 4-3/4" wide at the top rim opening. The base of the pottery bowl is incised with the "AA" logo and script "Van Briggle" and "Colo Spgs". There is a script "32" (I believe this is a "finisher number") along with ink marks and glaze remnants. According toThe Collector's Encyclopedia of Van Briggle Art Pottery
by Sasicki and Fania, these marks are indicators of a "residue bottom" on the bowl that likely date the piece from the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s. This gorgeous underglaze is a thick, deep mulberry color with a dark-blue overdrip on the decorative accents. The frog has 7 stem holes and is just over 1" tall and 2-1/4" wide at its base. There is also a finisher number "80" incised inside the flower frog. On the whole, this lovely set is very clean both inside and out. Check out all 12 photos! These sweet little cabinet pieces would be perfect for any Van Briggle or American art pottery collector. Check out my other pottery listings!
