Description
Being offered is a vintage American art pottery pitcher which could be used as a vase. I am representing this as Van Briggle art pottery made based on the glazed bottom and design. The bottom is glazed over showing the tripod stilt marks characteristic of early art pottery including Van Briggle. The bottom was xrayed by a previous buyer and no marks were shown. The largest grouping of unmarked Van Briggle pottery was when Ken Stevenson, a previous owner, cleared out the store room which contained pottery moved from the memorial pottery when it closed. Most of these pieces were unmarked and were usually an experimental or variation test piece. The pitcher show glaze crazing and hairlines. The pitcher body is intact with no chips or cracks. The hairlines are in the glaze and not the clay body. During the arts and crafts period, there were not that many companies that had their bottoms glazed over, but but some of the other companies that come to mind are Wheatly, Markham, Grueby, and Teco. Approx. 7 1/8" tall, the top opening is approx. 2" wide and the bottom is approx. 2 13/16" wide. I am open to feedback as to other companies that might have crafted this piece. The glaze color is a deep navy blue with a cream colored glaze at the upper portion.
